Dec 08, 2021 (newstodate): Currently serving as Greenland's only Transatlantic airport, Kangerlussuaq/Sdr Stromfjord Airport will have a future even after the completion by end of 2023 of two new Transatlantic airports at Nuuk and Ilulissat.
In September 2019, an agreement was inked between the governments of Denmark and Greenland to the effect that Kangerlussuaq Airport will remain in service, with the Danish Ministry of Defense to fund the operation.
To secure the future of Kangerlussuaq Airport in the longer term will require massive maintenance and reconstruction works on the airport's 2,500m runway that is impacted by changes in the permafrost conditions causing cracks in the runway surface.
However, despite the agreement works on reconstruction of the runway at the airport has still not been initiated, but plans are to start the planning process within the coming months, according to the Danish minister of defense's replies to questions in the Danish parliament.
It remains clear that after the reconstruction, the airport will remain in dual military/use including serving as an alternate airport to the coming new Transatlantic airports in Greenland now under construction.
Works will be funded by the Danish state; besides, Kangerlussuaq Airport may receive direct US investments, reflecting its importance for US military positioning in the Arctic region that is gaining importance as more maritime lanes are opening while the region's strategic position is attracting increased attention from many sides.
