Dec 20, 2021 (newstodate): All lights are now green for the new Icelandic airline PLAY to launch flights to the United States.
PLAY has received its foreign carrier permit and exemption authority from the US regulator, allowing the carrier to proceed with preparations for start of services to the US East coast in H1/2022.
PLAY will thus launch services starting in April 2022 between the USA and Iceland with onward connections to 21 other European destinations including London, Paris, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Prague, Dublin and Amsterdam.
The first two US destinations on the network of PLAY will be Boston Logan International Airport from May 11, 2022, and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, starting from April 20, 2022.
Play is now targeting expansion and growth, signed two LOI’s with two major international aircraft lessors in August this year.
These arrangements will increase PLAY’s fleet size from three to nine aircraft in spring 2023, and PLAY is already in final negotiations over the lease of a tenth aircraft.
The first LOI is for two new A320neo aircraft, manufactured in 2020, slated for delivery in Q1/ 2022.
The second LOI comprises three A320neo and one A321neo to enter into operation by spring 2023. All four aircraft will be delivered ex-factory through the lessor.
