Nov 08, 2021 (newstodate): While scheduled freighter and all-cargo traffic is still modest at Norway's Harstad-Narvik Airport, Evenes, the concept has proved its viability.
So much so that Perishable Center North AS is now planning to establish a dedicated seafood air cargo terminal for handling of Norwegian seafood exports from producers in the northern part of the country.
When realized, the planned terminal will be the first dedicated seafood cargo terminal in the country outside of Oslo Airport, and will drastically reduce the volume of trucking loads of shipments heading for uplift from Oslo Airport.
As a first step, Perishable Center North AS has signed a LoI with developer Evenes Tomteselskap AS that will construct the facility and rent it to the client.
Perishable Center Nord, with main shareholders including Nordlaks Opdrett, Ellingsen Seafood, Salfra and Astafjord Export, was established in 2020 to drive the development of seafood air logistics for northern Norway's seafood producers and exporters.
Starting from December 14, 2020, Qatar Airways has been operating cargo flights from Evenes in northern Norway to Doha lifting seafood exports to Asia, followed from February 3, 2021, by Virgin Atlantic with two weekly flights from Evenes to London Heathrow using Boeing 787-9 aircraft to lift seafood belly cargo into Virgin's route network in London with onward transfer to the US market, later changed to direct US-bound flights from Evenes.
Virgin Atlantic however pulled out again from summer 2021, leaving Qatar Airways alone at Evenes Airport operating a Boeing 777 all-cargo passenger aircraft with one weekly flight to Doha - currently suspended and awaiting resumption of services in the new winter schedule with a launch date yet to be announced.
