Nov 15, 2021 (newstodate): NATO has extended its contract with the Ukrainian ANTONOV Company via its agent Antonov Logistics SALIS GmbH for another five years.
Under the contract, SALIS will provide uplift capacity for NATO with two AN-124-100 aircraft available 24/7 at Leipzig Airport, supplemented with additional AN-124-100 aircraft as requested.
The Ruslan SALIS GmbH, a joint venture between Volga-Dnepr Group and ADB Antonov, was first set up in 2006 to supply AN-124-100 freighter aircraft to NATO to satisfy the requirements of its Strategic Airlift Interim Solution, SALIS, project.
Due to the rift between Ukraine and Russia, the cooperation between the Volga-Dnepr Group and Antonov was however abrogated, putting the SALIS program at risk.
But with a new contract signed in 2019 with Ukraine's Antonov to provide airlift capacity for another three-years period, NATO overcame the temporary difficulties and secured its strategic uplift capacity.
