Nov 17, 2021 (newstodate): EU sanctions against Belarus are now also targeting western aircraft lease contracts with the Belarus carrier Belavia.
The sanctions may either cut short existing aircraft lease contracts, or call for their immediate abrogation, sources say.
On November 16, 2021, the EU confirmed the termination of all aircraft leases to Belarus by European lessors, which forces the airline to return half of their current fleet on short notice.
Today, Belavia's aircraft fleet comprises 29 units, 13 of which are leased from western leasing companies.
Among the leased aircraft are three E195 and two E175 aircraft leased from the Danish lessor Nordic Aviation Capital under a contract signed in November 2018, as well as two more aircraft on earlier lease contracts.
