Nov 19, 2021 (newstodate): The new Icelandic LCC PLAY has again hit the headlines with announcement of aircraft acquisitions.
PLAY has thus signed an agreement with China Aircraft Leasing Group Holdings Limited for two ex-factory A320neo aircraft.
The aircraft will be delivered to PLAY next week and will be fitted and painted up to PLAY’s specifications.
The aircraft will be delivered directly from Airbus and slated for arrival in Iceland in March 2022 in time for the change to a hub-and-spoke business model.
In September 2021, PLAY signed an agreement with GECAS for three A320neo and one A321NX narrow body aircraft.
These aircraft are scheduled to be delivered between autumn 2022 and spring 2023.
Latest news from the Icelandic LCC PLAY are routes in summer 2022 from Keflavik to Lisbon in Portugal, Prague in the Czech Republic, Stuttgart in Germany, and Bologna in Italy. Also, two flights have been opened to Poland, with flights to Warsaw on December 23, 2021, and January 3, 2022.
Besides, PLAY has received initial approval from the US DOT for launching flights to the United States, and if no objections are filed, PLAY should receive its final approval before the end of this year, allowing the carrier to proceed with preparations for start of services to the US East coast in H1/2022.
