Nov 16, 021 (newstodate): After a long process of negotiations, EU and Armenia have signed a Common Aviation Area Agreement.
Negotiations started already in 2016 and did reach a conclusion in 2017 - but the process has been marked by the spat between Spain and the UK over the issue of Gibraltar.
With the UK out of EU, the two parties have now finally signed a single set of rules for air transport services between the EU and Armenia.
Beyond the issue of traffic rights, the EU-Armenia agreement will provide a single set of rules, a level playing field with strong provisions for fair competition, and a platform for future cooperation on a wide range of aviation issues such as safety, security, and ATM.
With the signature of the aviation agreement, the two parties will be able to exercise full third and fourth freedom traffic rights, allowing EU and Armenian airlines to provide an unlimited number of direct services between any point in the EU and any point in Armenia.
However, in June 2020, all air carriers in Armenia were entered on the EU Air Safety List, including Armenia, Armenia Airways, Atlantis Armenian Airlines, Armenian Helicopters, Atlantis European Airways and Mars Avia.
