Nov 18, 2021 (newstodate): With a ceremony on November 17, 2021, Vilnius Airport marked the start of construction of a new cargo handling terminal dedicated to DHL Express.
The coming new facility will comprise 4,800 m2 office and parcel sorting space with gates for loading and off-loading of shipments, immediately adjacent to the airside area and the aircraft parking stands.
On completion of the construction process, the new facility will be commissioned in Q3, 2022.
Behind the project is Lithuania's investment company UAB Eika Real Estate Fund that will remain owner of the buildings, with DHL on a long-term lease contract.
Since August 1, 2005, DHL has been operating an own freighter service between Copenhagen and Vilnius, earlier operated in cooperation with SAS Cargo.
In 2020, Vilnius Airport was the second-largest airport measured in cargo volumes in the Baltic region with a total of 14,476 tonnes, and alone among the region's airports to see growth after increasing by 3.6 percent, y-o-y, in volumes handled.
