Nov 30, 2021 (newstodate): From January 1, 2022, China is to enforce new restrictions on all-cargo flights with passenger aircraft.
CAAC thus commands that from 2022, passenger cabins will only be allowed to carry anti-epidemic-related items including PPE, which is expected to put further pressure on an air cargo market already over-heating, with further rates hike ahead.
So far, the restriction will apply only to Chinese carriers, but it might be expanded to comprise also foreign airlines as well.
Behind the CAAC decision may be considerations of fire risks involved with carrying cargo in the passenger compartments that do not have automated fire extinction systems as installed in aircraft belly compartments.
