Nov 12, 2021 (newstodate: As the situation on the Belarus/Polish border is heating up with thousands of Middle East migrants seeking a shortcut to EU, more sanctions on Belarus are looming.
Facing the danger of being overly embroiled in the dangerous situation and potentially hit by sanctions, airlines are now stepping back from allegations of assisting in the uplift of migrants into Belarus.
The Belarus national carrier Belavia has thus now announced that from today, citizens of Iraq, Syria, Yemen will not be accepted for transportation on Belavia flights from Turkey to Belarus.
Also, Turkish Airlines now says that it will not sell tickets for its flights to Belarus to residents of Iraq, Syria and Yemen; an exception will be made only for passengers with diplomatic passports.
The Iraqi CAA has announced the suspension of all flights from Iraq to Minsk, operated by Iraqi Airways and all other national air carriers, as well as offering that Iraqi Airways will operate repatriation flights for migrants willing to return home from Minsk.
In the searchlight is still the Russian carrier Aeroflot that however maintains that it has not been assisting migrants and refugees from the Middle East in traveling to Belarus.
The EU is considering blacklisting airlines involved in bringing in migrants, as part of measures to stop the build-up along the borders with Poland and Lithuania.
