Jan 29, 2021 (newstodate): Thinking out of the box, the projected new seafood logistics service at Sweden's Luleaa Kallax Airport will offer new and comprehensive opportunities for Norway's seafood exporters in the northernmost regions.
-The point of departure for our project is the fact that with rising sea temperatures, the center of gravity of Norway's seafood production sites moves north, which entails longer lead times in air logistics with Oslo Airport as its main gateway, says Bard Fleischer, Norrland Spedition & Transportation, driving the project in a cooperation with Swedavia and the Estonian aviation company Xfly.
-Instead of traditionally thinking north-south we think east-west, meaning that our goal is to set up freighter services at Luleaa Kallax Airport to provide direct uplift of fresh seafood to the Asian and North American markets.
-Compared to 24 hours trucking time from production sites in northern Norway to Oslo Airport, uplift from Luleaa will cut some 15 hours in transportation time, while exporters would also save some 5-6 hours compared to trucking shipments to Helsinki Airport.
-Our project does not aim at air logistics only; with cool terminal facilities at Luleaa, we will provide a comprehensive service including also handling of seafood for reprocessing at European plants, consolidating seafood shipments for streamlined, full-load trucking to continental destinations.
-With this comprehensive service we cater to the needs of the industry where producers often have a 50/50 split between volumes of fresh seafood for uplift and volumes to be reprocessed at other plants.
-We are now deep in negotiations with potential airline uplift providers and have met with strong support from the seafood industries in the three northernmost Norwegian regions, confirming our trust in the project and the commitment on the part of the customers.
-We strive to have all preparations completed before the end of this year's first quarter, aiming at start of services in the second quarter of 2021, says Mr Fleischer.
