Jan 26, 2021 (newstodate): Currently Greenland's only Transatlantic airport, Kangerlussuaq/Sdr Stromfjord Airport will have a future even after the completion by end of 2023 of two new Transatlantic airports at Nuuk and Ilulissat.
In September 2019, an agreement was inked between the governments of Denmark and Greenland to the effect that Kangerlussuaq Airport will remain in service, with the Danish Ministry of Defense to fund the operation.
To secure the future of Kangerlussuaq Airport in the longer term will require massive maintenance and reconstruction works on the airport's runway that is impacted by changes in the permafrost conditions causing cracks in the runway surface.
Besides, Kangerlussuaq Airport may receive direct US investments reflecting its importance for US military positioning in the Arctic region that is gaining importance as more maritime lanes are opening while the region's strategic position is attracting increased attention from many sides.
A refurbishment of the airport's 2,500m runway is now expected to commence in 2023 after passing the Greenlandic parliament ending years of uncertainty.
Also resurfacing are plans for construction of a road to connect the airport with Sisimiut municipality, 170 km away.
The road project has been under hefty and repeated debate for more than 20 years, but would have a significant impact also on the ability of the local seafood industry to export commodities to the global market via uplift from Kangerlussuaq Airport.
