Jan 14, 2021 (newstodate): Swedavia noted a 30.2 percent decline in air cargo volumes at its three main airports in 2020.
A total of 175,499 tonnes of cargo was handled at Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmo airports against 251,425 tonnes in 2019.
Stockholm Airport took the deepest hit with a drop by 324.7 percent to 107,942 tonnes, being highly dependent on passenger aircraft belly hold cargo.
-We are however seeing a gradual return of capacity and the negative trend is easing. The decline in volumes in 2020 mostly hit general cargo, while express cargo volumes actually increased by 18 percent, y-o-y, says Ylva Arvidsson, Swedavia Cargo Director.
Volumes at Gothenburg Landvetter Airport also decreased by 27.8 percent, y-o-y, to 46,254 tonnes, while Malmo Airport fared better, only 3.2 percent down to 21,303 tonnes, being primarily served by express carriers.
All-cargo and freighter operations at the three Swedavia airports increased in 2020, and Stockholm Arlanda Airport alone saw all-cargo/freighter operations increasing by 32 percent, y-o-y, not least due to PPE operations through a year of Covid-19.
Among the positive news in 2020 was the launch from May 15, 2020, by Qatar Airways Cargo of a weekly Boeing 777F freighter rotation between Doha and Gothenburg, in Sweden, as well as two weekly all-cargo Boeing 777 flights from Doha to Stockholm Airport.
