Sep 14, 2020 (newstodate): Opened in 1936, the lifeline of the Swedish airport at Bromma, near Stockholm city center, may be cut short.
The airport is managed by Swedavia and owned by Stockholm's government that has requested a study of the commercial prospects for Bromma Airport that serves as a hub for BRA that however cancelled all flights from April 2020.
The existing contract between Swedavia and Stockholm City expires in 2038, but the study on the sustained commercial viability of the airport opens up for an earlier decommissioning of the airport.
After the world war, the predecessors of SAS operated European flights at Bromma Airport; but the jet age called for longer runways and a more extensive airport infrastructure, leading to the construction of Stockholm Arlanda Airport and the move of international air traffic away from Bromma Airport.
Despite the dwindling importance of Stockholm Bromma Airport, it has seen the launch on August 24, 2020, of traffic by a small Swedish/Norwegian carrier Air Leap, now in the air on three new domestic routes from Stockholm Bromma Airport to Malmo, Gothenburg and Angelholm.
Other operators currently offering flights at Bromma Airport include AirGotland, Amapola, Brussels Airlines and Finnair - all operating with turboprop aircraft.
