Sep 18, 2020 (newstodate): Like any other airport, Sweden's community-owned Jonkoping Airport is seeing the effects from the Covid-19 crisis. But visions and aspirations for growth and development remain intact.
-We are seeing a mix of e-trade, automotive and medical shipments on the cargo side; but these days the growth in e-trade shipments are overtaking the other two segments, says Henrik Alverdal, Jonkoping Airport Marketing Manager.
-This has drawn our attention to the position of Latvia's Riga Airport that is bolstering its leading position in the Baltic air cargo market, not least due to the operations by Atran Airlines bringing in large volumes of ex-China e-trade goods via Moscow, as well as the operations of the Ukrainian carrier Eleron, also growing its traffic at Riga Airport.
-We are now in talks with Riga Airport as well as with a yet-undisclosed SAAB freighter operator to evaluate potentials for setting up a scheduled cargo operation between Jonkoping and Riga focusing on imports of e-trade shipments to the markets in Southern Sweden and beyond.
-This would need the efforts of an experienced cargo GSA with close relations to the regional markets, and our airline partner is now investigating this further.
-At this stage no more details can be provided, but hopes are that our joint efforts may produce concrete results in the not-too-distant future, says Mr Alverdal.
