Sep 21, 2020 (newstodate): Cargo volumes through the commune-owned Jonkoping Airport have dropped in 2020 - but not that much...
-Volumes in H1, 2020, were down eight percent, y-o-y, which is however not too discouraging in today's general business environment. And measured on a month-by-month basis we are actually seeing a positive growth during the period, says Henrik Alverdal, Jonkoping Airport Marketing Manager.
-We are indeed a small airport generating only 1,914 tonnes during January-June 2020; but we note that the volumes of e-trade goods are becoming the single largest and growing segment. And consisting primarily of light-weight shipments such as textiles or footwear, volumes are actually more important than mere weight.
-In effect, we are frequently seeing air cargo trucked at the airport as the existing uplift capacity by freighters is inadequate to serve the market, calling for our freighter operators Dan'X, time-matters and FedEx to consider adding larger aircraft on routes at Jonkoping Airport.
-This market trend in growing importance of e-trade shipments is also driving our project to seek a cooperation with Latvia's Riga Airport to establish a freighter service to connect to the large volumes of incoming e-trade shipments carried by Atran Airlines into Riga Airport for onward distribution to European markets, says Mr Alverdal.
