Sep 03, 2020 (newstodate): Air Greenland has today taken delivery of the first of two H225 Super Puma All Weather Search And Rescue equipped helicopters.
Ordered in October 2019, the new helicopters repurposed from the oil and gas industry will replace the last two remaining Sikorsky S-61 helicopters that are still operated under the SAR contract with Greenland renegotiated for extension beyond the current contract's expiry by the end of 2020.
Already in 2011, Air Greenland placed an order for two EC225 Super Puma Helicopters slated for delivery in 2014.
These aircraft were acquired in expectation of a future boom in oil and gas in the Arctic region - but as these hopes receded Air Greenland cancelled the order again in 2014.
Air Greenland phased out six of its eight S-61 helicopters from commercial service by December 31, 2012, keeping only the two aircraft for SAR mission at high maintenance and operational costs -and only one aircraft is today operating.
