Sep 22, 2020 (newstodate): The sustained Covid-19 crisis and its impact on the aviation industry has forced Wizz Air to again postpone the opening of its base at St Petersburg Pulkovo Aorport, in Russia.
The opening was originally slated to start in August 2020, later postponed till September - and now further pushed back to December 2020 as the market is still not opened.
Wizz Air now hopes to be able to launch services to destinations including Salzburg, Copenhagen, Venice, Treviso, Milan, Bergamo, and Malta from December 3, 2020.
The carrier has earlier revealed plans for launching flights from St Petersburg Pulkovo Airport to Bratislava, Bucharest, Copenhagen, Malta, Oslo, Salzburg, Sofia, Stockholm Skavsta, Vilnius, Bergamo, Venice, Bologna, Turin, and Catania.
With its new Russian base, the carrier will be in a position to fully exploit the 7th Freedom Rights allowing it to carry passengers or cargo between two foreign countries without any continuing service to its own country, as well as the visa-free access to the region, enforced from the start of 2020.
