Aug 06, 2020 (newstodate): Still strongly marked by the drop in demand during the current pandemic, Norway's exports of fresh salmon to China are at least showing signs of cautious increase.
In week 31, ending August 2, 2020, the country exported a total of 220 tonnes of fresh salmon to China against 144 tonnes in the week before, and only 68 tonnes in week 29.
Still, volumes in week 31 were 68 percent down on the same week in 2019.
In the first 31 weeks of this year, exports to China totaled 10,595 tonnes, 27 percent down on last year.
Besides dampening the global demand for fresh salmon, the coronavirus pandemic has also brought passenger aircraft movements to a near-standstill, producing a prohibitive lack of cargo uplift capacity at Oslo Airport.
The return by Emirates from August 4, 2020, of two weekly Boeing 777-300 rotations from Dubai will thus bring some remedy the Norwegian seafood exporters.
