Aug 21, 2020 (newstodate): Plans for the coming new airport infrastructure in Greenland have run into delays.
The planned new airport at Qaqortoq in the south slated for completion by Q4, 2023, will now expectedly be delayed by one year.
-It has emerged that the bids from the entrepreneurs by far exceed the budget, requiring a recalibration of the project and maybe a reconsideration of its financing, says Johannus Egholm Hansen, Kalallit Airports Chairman of the Board.
-The main reason for the unexpected discrepancy between the bids and the budget derives from the fact that being a relatively small project, the unit costs for moving the amount of stone to make room for the runway are necessarily higher than with the similar, but larger projects at Nuuk and Ilulissat, and also the costs of moving men and machinery to the site adds to the cost burden.
-We will now go through the project to see where corners may be cut and the impact on the financing required, but it is safe to say that the opening of the coming new airport at Qaqortoq will be delayed by one year or so, says Mr Hansen.
Currently served by a Helipad only, Qaqortoq will eventually have a new airport with a 1,200m runway allowing for fixed-wing operations.
