Aug 25, 2020 (newstodate): From the very start, the Lithuanian transport company RM Cargo Baltic has been participating actively in the import of PPE from China to the Baltic markets.
RM Cargo Baltic started out in April 2020 by chartering uplift capacity for a series of initially 16 all-cargo operations from China to primarily Vilnius Airport, sourcing capacity from various airline partners.
Extending the service into May 2020, the company finally performed 23 cargo charter operations - but since then this business has been dampening.
-We actually did operate an all-cargo charter flight from China to Vilnius Airport earlier this month as a one-off operation contracted by a customer needing fast delivery, says Aleksas Mineikis, RM Cargo Baltic Head of Sales Department.
-While the all-cargo operation was new to everyone as it started in May, we now found that everyone involved was quite experienced with this special type of handling. Everything went smoothly, and we would certainly be ready to move again whenever that would be requested.
-But generally, much of these shipments is now going by rail or by sea from China when clients can accept the longer delivery times. On the other hand, the situation can change rapidly if political decisions on PEE require prompt imports and fast logistics.
-As the costs or PPE have come down dramatically since the early start of the pandemic, big-volume imports by sea of rail may also entail risks for the importing party as he may end up with heavily over-priced goods once they hit the market.
-Generally speaking, today's market is low in volumes, and we remain sitting on the fence awaiting things to move again, says Mr Mineikis.
