Aug 05, 2020 (newstodate): As of August 1, 2020, Wizz Air Hungary became the first airline in Europe to have the European Union Aviation Safety Agency as its competent authority responsible for safety oversight.
Moving this responsibility from a national to a transnational EU environment, the carrier enhances the cooperation with national civil aviation authorities across its current and future markets.
Wizz Air Hungary remains a Hungarian airline, and the Hungarian Civil Aviation Authority retains the regulatory control over the carrier’s operating license and route permits.
-The EU operating certificate is well-suited for airlines such as Wizz Air which have multiple operating bases in different EASA member states. As the centralized competent authority for Wizz Air’s operations, EASA will ensure an internationally recognized high standard of oversight for the airline, says Patrick Ky, Executive Director, EASA.
The Wizz Air Group operates a fleet of 126 Airbus A320 family aircraft on routes to 46 countries connecting over 160 cities.
