Aug 20, 2020 (newstodate): Like other markets, Iceland has seen air cargo volumes down in 2020 due to the pandemic.
However, Icelandair's all-cargo operations in cooperation with partners did alleviate some of the negative effects from the virtual stop to all passenger operations at Keflavik Airport.
With the first rotation on April 26, 2020, DB Schenker launched a partnership with Icelandair for a series of all-cargo flights between China, Europe and the USA, with three of Icelandair's four Boeing 767-300 passenger aircraft converted to cargo purposes for flights from Shanghai to Munich and to Chicago via a stop at Keflavik, Iceland.
In 2019, Icelandair Cargo also landed a contract with TNT and FedEx concerning transport of all shipments to and from Iceland under a three-year contract taking effect from early in 2020, boosting the volume of Icelandair Cargo flights between Iceland and Liege, the hub of FedEx and TNT in Europe.
Icelandair Cargo has thus been operating seven weekly rotations between Keflavik and Liege, and three weekly rotations to East Midlands.
As the coronavirus hit, volumes through Keflavik Airport plummeted by 30.9 percent, y-o-y, in April 2020; but already in May as the traffic by Icelandair Cargo/DB Schenker had started, the decline was "only" 11.3 percent, even turning into an increase by 5.7 percent in June while dampening again to a decline by 4.9 percent in July as the all-cargo flights decreased.
During January-July 2020, Keflavik Airport has thus seen air cargo volumes down by 10.2 percent to a total of 28,615 tonnes.
