Jul 31, 2020 (newstodate): Plans for the coming new airport infrastructure in Greenland have run into delays.
Estimates - or hopes - are now that the new Transatlantic airport serving Greenland's capital Nuuk may still make it in time with commissioning slated for Q3, 2023, while the coming new Transatlantic airport at Ilulissat may be delayed until Q3-Q4, 2023, one year later than so far planned.
Finally, the planned new airport at Qaqortoq in the south is still slated for completion by Q4, 2023, but the pertinent contracts still remain to be signed with the construction companies leaving the question open if, or not, the set date is realistic.
Behind the uncertainty and revisions of the time schedules are issues including late start of construction works at Nook which spills over to the project at Ilulissat as the same engineering and construction companies are involved in both cases, in addition to weather conditions and the ongoing pandemic.
The opening of new Transatlantic airports at Nuuk and Ilulissat will have a decisive impact on the country's transport and logistics, shifting the passenger traffic away from Kangerlussuaq Airport.
Besides, the new airport infrastructure is also a crucial element in the future planning of fleet and routes by Air Greenland.
Adding to the confusion, the current CEO at Kalaallit Airports Holding A/S managing the airports, Peter Wistoft has announced his resignation with effect from September 30, 2020, after taking up the position only from February 2019.
As a temporary move, the company has installed Aviaaja Karlshoj Knudsen, Kalaallit Airports Executive President Projects, in the chair pending a later decision on a successor to Mr Wistoft.
