Jul 31, 2020 (newstodate): Until the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, Georgia was a promising and skyrocketing market for airlines. Not so these days...
The Civil Aviation Agency of the Ministry of Economy of Georgia has announced that international regular air traffic will not resume until September 1, 2020 - at the earliest.
The decision is in line with the latest NOTAM directive in effect from July 21 to August 31, 2020, containing restrictions to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
Since March 20, Georgia's borders have been closed to foreigners, except in special cases, and only charter flights are carried out to repatriate Georgian citizens.
Despite the general lock-down in air traffic, Georgia has however allowed the access of passengers from five countries: Germany, France, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, whose citizens are granted unconditional entry into the country.
Thus, Lufthansa will presumably become the first airline to resume regular flights to Georgia from August 2, followed from August 8 by Air France, while Latvia's airBaltic is negotiating with the Georgian Ministry of Economy to resume flights from Riga.
airBaltic has been online with flights between Riga and Tbilisi since May 3, 2004.
