Jul 28, 2020 (newstodate): Cargo normally earns only scant attention in airlines' financial reports. This is, however, also changing during the current Covid-19 era.
As one example, the importance of cargo operations are highlighted in the Finnair Group Half-year Report 1 January – 30 June 2020.
-The review period also included many glimmers of hope. The demand for cargo-only flights remained high throughout the quarter, and we flew 602 one-way cargo flights, mainly between Finland and Asia, Topi Manner, Finnair Group CEO, says in the report.
-Cargo exceptionally accounted for over 70 percent of our revenue for the quarter, and its profitability remained at a good level. Otherwise, our result reflected a near-complete halt to our traffic.
And the figures on the period are indeed telling:
In June 2020, the company carried a total of only 4,084 tonnes of cargo, down 72.5 percent, y-o-y, including 3,817 tonnes on all-cargo flights compared to 0 in June 2019.
In January-June 2020, the total cargo volume was 40,519 tonnes, down 50.6 percent, y-o-y, with all-cargo volumes at 9,810 tonnes, compared to 0 tonnes in H1/2019.
Crucial to the carrier in June 2020, the Asian lanes generated a flat zero in cargo volumes, while down 65.2 percent in H1, 2020, to 20,716 tonnes.
