Jul 29, 2020 (newstodate): Latvia's Riga Airport has seen cargo operations growing over the last two months while the passenger traffic has remained close to zero.
Driving the development has been the cooperation between the Alibaba Group's logistics arm Cainiao and Latvia's postal authority.
By July 20, 2020, Latvia Post had received 165 mail transit cargo freighters from China, an average of 23 transit cargo aircraft per month during the latest two-months period, for onward distribution to European markets including Ukraine.
The incoming traffic is provided by the Volga-Dnepr Group's subsidiary Atran flying in from Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport, while the Ukrainian carrier Eleron operates between Riga Airport and Kiev and Lviv.
Eleron is however planning to grow its traffic from Riga Airport further.
-Our business plan is to build up a wide network, and in this we will cooperate with larger airlines offering access to new markets. We started cooperating with airBaltic and Lufthansa and are now in talks with KLM and TAP, planning to expand to new airports in Europe including Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Lisbon and Madrid, said Andrii Kishynskyi, Eleron CEO, at the recent webinar facilitated by Riga Airport.
