Jul 03, 2020 (newstodate): A true workhorse serving the world with flights to carry PPE during the corona crisis: Antonov AN-225 Mriya.
In the fleet of the Ukrainian cargo airline Antonov Airlines, the world's only AN-225 was in for 18 months of heavy maintenance but back in service again from March 25, 2020 - just in time for meeting the spike in cargo capacity demand with an intensive flights program starting from April 11.
The AN-225 was in for another maintenance check from June 12, 2020, but during the two months 53 operations were performed, logging 318 flight hours, compared to normally around 10 heavy-lift operations per year in "normal" times.
During these two months, the aircraft operated into 14 airports in 12 countries, including 13 calls at Alma Aty, 11 at Tianjin, and eight at Anchorage.
A record was set as it landed in Paris on April 19, 2020, with eight million masks totaling 1,000 cb m of cargo - the largest volume ever transported by air and requiring nine hours of unloading.
