Jun 02, 2020 (newstodate): The virtual stop to passenger flights takes a hard toll on cargo volumes at any airport in 2020 - but Billund Airport seems to be recovering.
In May 2020, the airport handled a total of 6,022 tonnes - just 2.8 percent below May 2019 levels.
The promising performance was driven by an increase by 7.8 percent in imports, to 2,180 tonnes, while export volumes were still eight percent down, y-o-y, to 3,842 tonnes.
After the first five months of 2020, the airport has thus handled 27,134 tonnes, which is 8.7 percent down, y-o-y.
Cargo volumes trucked into Billund Airport constitute the bulk of the airport's cargo, and this volume is steeply down during this Covid-19 period.
On the other hand, the airport is seeing growth in flown volumes by integrators UPS, Fedex/TNT, and DHL as well as Turkish Cargo, to which is added growing traffic in the ad-hoc cargo segments including shipments of perishables, live animals, and PPE on freighters as well as on all-cargo passenger aircraft.
The performance in May 2020 compares favorably to the drop by 21 percent in the preceding month, and the drop by 16.7 percent in March.
