Jun 17, 2020 (newstodate): Norway's seafood exporters are badly hurt by the limitations on salmon exports to China.
After the recent findings of Coronavirus at a market in Beijing, early indications were that the source was a chopping board where salmon had been sliced.
Customs and VET inspectors in Beijing have decreed an immediate stop to imports of salmon while authorities in Shanghai have raised the requirements on inspections of each shipment.
While China seems eager to claim that the source of the new outbreak are European imports, it has however been refuted that the virus has been carried in salmon meat.
Anyhow, Norwegian salmon exporters are now again seeking other channels and markets for the exports in challenging times for the industry.
In week 24, ending June 14, 2020, volumes of Norwegian salmon to the Chinese market were again down by 34 percent while down 10 percent in weeks 1-24.
