Jun 04, 2020 (newstodate): Lithuania's Kaunas Airport has seen extraordinarily high cargo loads from the start of this year's second quarter.
In April 2020, the airport thus handled a total of 957 tonnes of cargo, compared to 1,327 tonnes at the country's largest airport at Vilnius, and in May the volumes handled at Kaunas Airport were 979 tonnes, compared to 1,074 tonnes at Vilnius Airport.
A key driver behind the significant growth in cargo at Kaunas Airport is the Lithuanian forwarding and transport company Hoptrans that set up a scheduled all-cargo service from Beijing and Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport to Kaunas, by April 2020 operating six weekly flights chartering converted passenger aircraft from various Russian and East European airlines.
