Jun 04, 2020 (newstodate): Seafood producers and exporters in Northern Norway are following the ongoing feasibility study for freighter services from the region with great interest.
80 percent of Norway's salmon and seafood production is located at production sites in the country's northern region, which requires two days of trucking into Oslo Airport for uplift to the global marketplace, or alternatively trucking to Helsinki Airport requiring some 20 hours of trucking.
-All seafood exporters in Northern Norway are keen to see if the feasibility study confirms that direct freighter services from the region may constitute a sustainable air logistics solution. It is indeed a long-nourished hope in the industry, says Stale Slemmen, Cermaq Logistics Manager, who is involved in the feasibility study.
The study was initiated earlier this year in a cooperation between the Norwegian Seafood Federation and Avinor, and is expected to present its results by the end of this year.
Three airports in Northern Norway with runways at 2,800 m and 45 m width, - at Eveness, Bodo and Lakselv - are potentially capable of handling large aircraft including Boeing 747/Boeing 777 freighters, provided the pertinent infrastructure is upgraded to allow for certification of scheduled flight operations with wide-body aircraft without weight penalty and other restrictions.
