Jun 15, 2020 (newstodate): Construction work has now commenced on a new DHL Sorting Center at Riga Airport, Latvia.
The first steps were taken last week with a traditional ground breaking vent, and after these first shovels of earth the coming new complex will be commissioned in the first half of 2021.
The new facility will cover 4,500 sq m, including 2,500 sq m warehouse, which is twice the size of the company's existing facility in Riga.
The airside building will have direct access to freighter aircraft parking stands saving time in cargo handling, and the warehouse will be equipped with an automated sorting system securing fast processing of shipments.
On November 6, 2019, Riga Airport, DHL Latvia and real estate developer Castor Construction signed an agreement on DHL's lease of the coming new complex for a period of 10 years, with an option for a further 15-20 years extension.
In 2019 on-line at Riga airport for 25 years, DHL is invariably among the airport's Top-3 generators of cargo with flight operations by EAT as well as own freighters
