Jun 10, 2020 (newstodate): DB Schenker Iceland has reaped great success with the freighter service to China, lifting Icelandic seafood to its new market.
-DB Schenker Iceland signed the initial agreement with Icelandair for a series of three all-cargo flights from Keflavik to Shanghai with the first service on May 29, 2020. But this was only the beginning, says Valdimar Oskarsson, Schenker Iceland Mng Dir.
-After this, our German colleagues were added to the project concerning flights between Munich, Chicago and Shanghai, and till June 16 when the agreement expires, a total of 62 flights all routed via Iceland will have been performed.
-The routing is Keflavik-Shanghai-Munich-Keflavik, with crew change on Iceland due to issues of traffic rights requiring the chartered Icelandair aircraft to return from the USA and Europe to China via Keflavik.
-Onboard the chartered Boeing 767-300 all-cargo flights is a total of 10 people including two cockpit crews, and everyone has been impressed to see all staff, including the captains, taking part in the physical loading and unloading of shipments in Shanghai.
-This has provided a huge boost to the seafood exporters in Iceland as an opportunity to market their products in China, also benefiting from the Free Trade Agreement granting zero customs which adds a competitive edge.
-The Icelandic seafood exporters have long yearned for a China freighter, and we now have to see what will come after this as the agreement with Icelandair expires, says Mr Oskarsson.
