Jun 22, 2020 (newstodate): Summer is coming to Iceland after all, despite the coronavirus - and air traffic is slowly gaining pace.
In summer 2017, 27 airlines had Keflavik Airport on their schedule; in 2018 the number grew to 29 - and for summer 2019, early expectations were that at least 28 airlines would call at the airport.
Summer 2020 will fall far behind last years' traffic, but the number of airlines with flights to Iceland is growing after all.
Only one month earlier, only six airlines had confirmed plans for flights to Keflavik in summer 2020 - and this has now grown to 10 airlines.
Latest carrier to launch flights to Keflavik is CSA from June 17, 2020, with two weekly rotations from Prague.
Since the curfew on flights to and from Iceland was lifted on June 15, 2020, Icelandair, SAS, Wizz Air and Atlantic Airways have started flights, and over the coming two weeks Transavia will add flights to Amsterdam, Paris and Nantes; Norwegian will start scheduled flights between Keflavik and Oslo on July 1, joined by Lufthansa with scheduled flights to Frankfurt and Munich.
In July, Austrian and airBaltic will follow suit, and more will probably follow as tourism recovers in the coming summer holiday season.
