May 12, 2020 (newstodate): According to Swedavia statistics on cargo volumes through Stockholm Airport, volumes increased rather unexpectedly during Q1, 2020.
A total of 23,529 tonnes of cargo was thus handled at the airport, an increase by 19.8 percent, y-o-y, in times when passenger flights came to a virtual stand-still due to the effect from the coronavirus outbreak.
While volumes during January and February 2020 remained almost unchanged month-by-month, the increase was seen in March where volumes grew by no less than 72.6 percent to 8,114 tonnes.
Once Swedavia returns to full operations after the current suspension of much of the administrative work, it remains to be seen if the unusual spike in cargo volumes in March 2020 was an effect from the number of ad-hoc all-cargo flights carrying PPE - or a statistical error.
