May 20, 2020 (newstodate): Western aircraft manufacturers struggling to keep orders in the book may envy their Russian counterpart, United Aircraft Corporation.
Seeing little success with exporting Russia's new-generation commercial aircraft Superjet 100 beyond Russia and the CIS, the Russian government has plainly ordered the charter carrier Red Wings to return to its original concept as an operator of Russian-made aircraft, Superjet 100 and later the MC-21, still not on the assembly line.
Red Wings will thus become the operator of up to 76 Superjet 100 aircraft by 2024.
Set up in 1999, the carrier is today operating a fleet of 12 Airbus A320 Family aircraft, earlier planning to add an initial batch of six Airbus A220-300 aircraft, which was, however, changed to ordering instead 16 MC-21 aircraft with deliveries starting from 2021 - if plans mature.
In return for the offer no-one could refuse, Red Wings will be guaranteed favorable aircraft lease conditions and attractive state subsidies.
