May 13, 2020 (newstodate): Today, the Norwegian regional carrier Wideroe operates a fleet of 32 aging Bombardier Dash 8 100/200/300 as its smallest aircraft.
The aircraft are serving on the carrier's network of smaller airfields in Norway and with the extended service program launched in 2017, the service life of these aircraft has been extended by 50 per cent, from 80,000 to 120,000 cycles allowing for operations till 2025-30.
-The aircraft are ideally suited for our purpose, including cargo capacity to serve smaller communities with fast deliveries of medical supplies, e-trade and other commodities, says Thomas Lone, Wideroe Cargo Manager.
-However, we see the future replacement of the Dash 8 aircraft to be a new generation of aircraft and have entered a partnership with Rolls Royce to develop an electric aircraft for the future, says Mr Lone.
With short routes, short runways and small local markets, Wideroe's route network might be an ideal test bed for the planned new generation of small, low-emission aircraft.
