May 11, 2020 (newstodate): Plans for establishing Eveness Airport in northern Norway as a coming new venue for seafood exports to the global market place are still underway.
A key driver behind the project is the Norwegian company Pole Position Logistics aiming at launch of Boeing 777F or Boeing 747-400F operations at Eveness Airport, in the country's northernmost region close to the major whitefish and redfish production sites.
While hopes were to see the start of services already in 2019, several snags emerged along the road - but the project is indeed taking shape.
A new company has thus been set up at Eveness: Perishable Center Nord, with main shareholders including Nordlaks Opdrett, Ellingsen Seafood, Salfra and Astafjord Export.
With Stig Winther, Pole Position Logistics as General Manager, the company comprising both producers, exporters and logistics providers in the seafood industry will work for attracting freighter carriers to allocate capacity to serving seafood-carrying flights to China, North America and other markets on a scheduled basis.
-At this moment, most of the pertinent GSE is in place at Eveness Airport that has the capacity of handling large freighter aircraft, and a main deck loader, still at Oslo Airport, will be sailed to a port in Northern Norway by July as the last piece of equipment to be installed, says Mr Winther.
-Needless to say, the current Covid-19 crisis has temporarily put the brake on some parts in the plan, notably negotiations with carriers, but preparations are moving forward anyhow, and hopes to return freighter uplift directly from the country's northern region containing the main production sites will materialize by the joint efforts of all parties involved, says Mr Winther.
