May 27, 2020 (newstodate): Copenhagen Airport may see the Iranian carrier Mahan Air returning from summer 2020.
According to the airline's website, and confirmed to newstodate by an airline marketing consultant, flights are scheduled to commence from July 19, 2020, with one weekly rotation on Sundays using Airbus A340-300 aircraft, pending a successful outcome from current negotiations with the Danish CAA.
From June 9, 2016, Mahan Air was operating two weekly rotations between Tehran and Copenhagen with Airbus A340 aircraft, with a third rotation planned to be added from June 13, 2017.
But the route was closed down again already from March 2017, allegedly after an inspection detected that the airline carried armed air marshals, which is not permitted under Danish law.
Since December 2011, USA has enforced harsh sanctions on Mahan Air, accusing it of illegally transporting military equipment, personnel and munitions into Syria and other war zones.
Many European countries including France, Italy, Germany and Spain have banned Mahan Air from their airspace, and the carrier was also formerly on the EU Commission's black-list in 2007 over safety concerns, but lifted off the list again in 2008.
