May 28, 2020 (newstodate): Fresh salmon to China requires air transportation to reach markets with sufficient shelf time.
With the first flight to lift 25 tonnes of salmon on Friday May 29, Icelandic exporters of fresh salmon to China will benefit from a series of three direct all-cargo flights from Keflavik to a Chinese airport, operated with Icelandair passenger aircraft converted to all-cargo operations using the belly compartment.
Behind the operation is also DB Schenker Iceland that sells the cargo capacity on the rotation in both directions.
In 2014, Iceland and China signed a Free Trade Agreement later substantiated by the signing of three new protocols allowing Icelandic salmon farmers to start export of seafood, notably salmon, to China.
Iceland's seafood exporters have long yearned for a direct flight between Iceland and China, last pinning hopes on the planned opening in 2020 of Juneyao Airlines' extension of its route between Shanghai and Helsinki.
