Apr 20, 2020 (newstodate): During the first 15 weeks of 2020, ending April 12, Copenhagen Airport has seen its cargo traffic in a surprisingly good shape, all things considered.
According to statistics, the airport thus saw import volumes up by 4.5 percent, to 10,722 tonnes, while export volumes increased by no less than 20.4 percent, to a total of 14,014 tonnes during the period.
-Not surprisingly, belly cargo volumes carried by passenger aircraft were significantly down as all passenger flights came to a virtual stop from mid-February and notably through March, resulting in a decline by some 20 percent, y-o-y, in this segment, says Marianne Juul, Copenhagen Airport Air Cargo manager.
-In contrast to this, import cargo carried on all-cargo flights increased by close to 12 percent, while export volumes were up by some 35 percent due to an increase in pure freighter operations in March as well as increasing use of passenger aircraft on all-cargo operations.
-Comparing the statistics for the individual periods, it should be noted, however, that our preliminary figures build on actual weight and not chargeable weight as would normally be the case.
-Much of the cargo through the airport today consists of PPE shipments that do not "weigh" as heavily in statistics as chargeable weight would, Ms Juul says.
