Apr 15, 2020 (newstodate): Sweden's community-owned Jonkoping Airport is seeing total cargo volumes down in 2020 - but it is not all that negative..
-Cargo volumes are indeed down by some 14 percent, y-o-y, during January-March 2020, but despite this we are actually seeing an increase by some 10 percent in volumes over the last few weeks, indicating an underlying positive trend, says Henrik Alverdal, Jonkoping Airport Marketing Manager.
-The recent signs of growth are seen in the volumes carried into Jonkoping Airport by time:matters where volumes have grown by some six tonnes per week, primarily consisting of shipments for transfer to Helsinki on the network of time:matters, which also comprises onward flights from Jonkoping to Oslo and Billund.
-Besides the traffic generated by time:matters, our cargo business also comprises operations by TNT and DAN'X, as well as ad-hoc cargo charter operations
-Like any other airports, Jonkoping Airport is badly hurt by the decline in passenger air traffic, but happily cargo traffic is still very much alive as a crucial element in the country's over-all infrastructure, often neglected in the public debate over the role of air traffic, says Mr Alverdal.
Having recently completed a runway development project to comply with Code 4E standards, the airport is now capable of operating larger freighter and passenger aircraft types including Boeing 787, Airbus A330 and similar wide-body aircraft, which has so far required dispensation in each case.
But due to the current business downturn, a project for construction of new aircraft parking stands with construction, earlier slated to start by April or May this year, has now been put on hold till a later date.
The project includes two dedicated freighter parking stands in front the air cargo terminal to ease handling of cargo shipments between aircraft and terminal.
