Apr 17, 2020 (newstodate): With the passenger air traffic almost at a full stop, Sweden's airports managed by Swedavia are suffering in cargo volumes as well.
-The coronavirus has brought cargo volumes to low levels as most of the cargo is carried in passenger aircraft belly compartments, says Ylva Arvidsson, Swedavia Cargo Director.
-For Stockholm Arlanda, Gothenburg and Malmo we are seeing total volumes down by about 20 percent in Q1, 2020, while volumes in March alone were down almost 27 percent, compared to 2019.
-It should be noted, though, that volumes through Malmo Airport have remained rather stable in March 2020 as the cargo traffic here is generated primarily by the integrators that have retained their traffic practically unchanged.
-On the positive side, we have been handling a number of ad-hoc cargo charter flights bringing in PPE for domestic distribution in Sweden as well as onward transportation to other Scandinavian destinations.
-Despite the current challenges, we remain convinced of the sustained importance of air cargo as the effects on the industry from the current pandemic fade again, says Ms Arvidssson.
Earlier this month, the drastic decline in cargo caused Swedavia to suspend its engagement in Air Cargo Sweden, the air cargo community established in November 2018 by Swedavia to spur the cargo country's air cargo business, as well as releasing its new Cargo Development Manager, Nathalie Herget, after less than two months in the office.
