Apr 29, 2020 (newstodate): All seafood handling companies at Oslo Airport are seeing volumes down - but GPC reports a comparatively stable situation.
-We are indeed down by some 25 percent in volumes during the latter half of March and during April, says Torgil Staalberg, GPC Mng Dir.
-We are thus now handling some 7,500 tonnes per month, compared to 10-11,000 tonnes in "normal" times, but volumes are not sliding now, and we are probably less hurt than other providers at the airport.
-The over-all picture is rather complex, though; measured in volumes, SAS Cargo is practically non-existing, the earlier large volumes of seafood trucked to Helsinki for uplift by Finnair have almost disappeared, while an integrator like UPS is expanding significantly.
-Qatar Airways is down from two to one daily passenger flights but expanding in freighter operations with several weekly ad-hoc flights in addition to the scheduled three weekly operations with two freighters on Tuesdays.
-Korean Air is maintaining its three weekly freighter operations, while Emirates is down to one against earlier two weekly freighter flights, and all passenger flights are cancelled.
-On the other hand, Lufthansa Cargo is growing its volumes in the Norwegian market as is also KLM, and the country's forwarders are ready to take advantage of any capacity available.
-Despite the over-all drop in volumes handled at GPC, we still manage to avoid laying off staff as we need a high level of flexibility to manage unchanged peaks at certain weekdays, notably Tuesdays, and we strive to keep our work force intact as long as it goes, says Mr Staalberg.
