Mar 01, 2020 (newstodate): As expected, statistics from Denmark's Billund Airport on cargo volumes in March 2020 are not bedside reading.
The airport saw its total volumes down by 16.7 percent, y-o-y, to 5,529 tonnes.
Imports suffered the most with a drop by 21 percent, y-o-y, to 1,631 tonnes, while exports were also down by 14.7 percent to 3,898 tonnes.
After the first three months of 2020, the airport has been handling 16,653 tonnes which is a drop by 6.8 percent, again with imports down 13.4 percent and exports trailing behind by 3.9 percent.
The bulk of the cargo handled at Cargo Center Billund is trucked to and from European hubs, and with an almost complete stop to passenger flights the lower-deck capacity is gone, immediately affecting the operations at Billund Airport as well.
However, the airport is still handling some 42 weekly freighter operations by integrators UPS, Fedex/TNT, and DHL as well as Turkish Cargo, and in total the all-cargo operators aggregate some 400 tonnes of cargo per week, imports and exports combined.
Some consolation may be found in comparing with the cargo figures for Q1/2009 when the financial crisis hit the most: during that period, cargo volumes through Billund Airport were down to 10,423 tonnes, dropping month by month during January-March.
