Apr 23, 2020 (newstodate): The Municipality of Moldova's capital Chisinau has turned down plans for construction of a new passenger terminal at Chisinau International Airport.
Since 2013, the Russian-owned investment company Avia Invest has been operating the airport under a 50-year contract, and plans were presented for construction of a 32,000 sq m terminal designed to handling of up to 4.2 million passengers annually, with the option of extension to 4,5 million passengers, compared to the close to three mio passengers handled in 2019.
In Avia Invest's opinion, the denial of a construction certificate reflects political issues, and the company hopes for the government of Moldova to overturn the decision by the Municipality.
The ownership of the concession is rather complicated, however: on August 28, 2019, the Guernsey-based company NR Investments completed the purchase of Komaksavia Airport Invest, the Cyprus-incorporated owner of a 95 percent shareholding in Russian-owned Moldovan company, Avia-Invest, the concession company of Moldova’s Chisinau International airport.
