Apr 01, 2020 (newstodate): The Latvian state has decided to bolster airBaltic's capital base with the injection of EUR 150 million in an effort to support the carrier in the economic crisis.
airBaltic is owned 80 percent by the Latvian state, with the remaining 20 percent held by the Danish national Lars Thuesen through his fully-owned company Aircraft Leasing 1 SIA.
So far, no decision on a similar cash injection by Aircraft Leasing 1 has been announced.
-It goes without saying that all airlines are fighting a hard battle in this period, not excluding airBaltic, says Lars Thuesen.
-Much effort is made at all levels, including among shareholders, to remedy the situation and to secure that airBaltic will emerge from the crisis in a shape securing long-term profitable operations, says Mr Thursen.
Speaking to the Baltic media LETA, the carrier's CEO, Martin Gauss remains rather cocky about the airline's situation:
-At airBaltic, we are capable of dealing with the crisis ourselves, but as the crisis continues, we will look at what support may become available. It may also be support from the European Union. It has not yet been decided. Both the Latvian state and our private shareholder have said they want us as to continue to operate as an airline.
