Apr 30, 2020 (newstodate): Progress on Iceland's coming new low-cost carrier PLAY is impacted by two unforeseen factors - drawing into opposite directions...
One is the outbreak of the Covid-19 that has brought all passenger flights to a standstill for a yet-undetermined period.
Luckily, Play did not manage to get airborne as planned by December 2019, starting out with two Airbus A321 aircraft, growing to six aircraft in 2020, and to 10 aircraft within the first three years of operation.
Another factor is the current crisis around Norwegian that in the best-case scenario will see the carrier in the air again in some form, but not until spring/summer 2021, freeing market opportunities for a newcomer like PLAY.
Now reportedly ready to enter the market, PLAY would potentially benefit from lower aircraft lease costs in today's waning market as well as an abundance of available cockpit and cabin crews.
According to the original strategy, among the airline's first destinations from Keflavik would be London, Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris, Alicante and Tenerife, and from 2020 plans comprised flights to four destinations in North America, with options including Boston, New York, Baltimore, and Toronto.
This strategy has now been scaled down, reflecting new market conditions sources say.
