Apr 22, 2020 (newstodate): Since March 20, 2020, all Air Greenland's flight operations including the daily direct non-stop flights between Greenland and Denmark have been suspended.
Initially announced to last till April 9, 2020, the suspension of all domestic and international flights was later extended till April 30.
The current emergency schedule is thus continuing, comprising a thrice-weekly medic-only flight between Nuuk and Copenhagen via a re-fuelling stop at Keflavik, on Iceland, using Bombardier Dash 8 Q200 aircraft equipped with extra fuel tanks.
As the carrier's sole long-haul aircraft, an Airbus A330-200, is in for maintenance, Air Greenland has been forced to charter an Airbus A330 aircraft from HiFly for two weekly rotations between Kangerlussuaq and Copenhagen to cater to the needs for air cargo to and from Denmark.
The maintenance of Air Greenland's Airbus A330 was to be completed by late March - but due to the suspension of works at Airbus because of the coronavirus, the aircraft is still in Toulouse, with no confirmed date of delivery.
Air Greenland has thus been forced to prolong its lease of the HiFly aircraft.
In the meantime, Air Greenland has put the Airbus A330-200 aircraft up for sale after inking an MoU with Airbus for delivery of an Airbus A330-800neo, slated for delivery by the end of 2021.
